Epirus excursion - Day one

The Association of Licensed Tourist Guides, Athens-Greece organises every year an educational excursion for its members. The goal of each excursion is to visit areas not much known, enrich our knowledge for the history and their monuments and find out what each area can offer.

This year it was Epirus turn. Epirus is in the Northwest of Greece and quite mountainous, but it has got places of wild beauty and these places are very diverse from each other.

We started early in the morning from Athens and after a few necessary stops we arrived in the surroundings of Amvrakikos Golf where we visited the facility of Thesauri Caviar (www.thesauricaviar.com). It' s a farm that cultivates caviar from sturgeon since 1992and it is distributing it to the Greek and International market. And this caviar is of very high quality!

Mrs Efi Spyropoulou welcomed us in the premices and explained the history of the farm. Later she introduced us to the flavours of the three sturgeon species, that they cultivate (Huso Huso, Acipenser Gueldestaedtii και Acipenser Baerii)!

We felt like emperors, since only the members of the court of the Tsar of Russia had the privilege to eat that!

After this visit we travelled to Arta, the capital of the once upon a time Despotate of Epirus. We saw the legendary bridge of Arta, which is mentioned in the folklore Greek poetry and the church of Parigoritissa (13th century). And the of course we had lunch in order to gain the energy we lost...

When we arrived in Ioannina, we visited the Jewish synagogue and mrs. Alegra Matsa narrated us about the once big Romaniot Jewish community. Besides the upside down it survived and thrived through the centuries, but the 92% of thr population got exterminated in the period of 1940-1945.

After a very long but fulfilling day we needed some rest. So you too. The next days are coming...

The Association of Licensed Tourist - Athens would like to thank the people that welcomed us and guided us through history and not only. And of course, we would like to thank the participants, without whom this excursion could take place!

To be continued...
