The Association of Licensed Tourist Guides -Athens, Greece organised as every year an educational excursion. This time it was in the South of Peloponnese, to Messinia (SW of Peloponnese)!
Driving through Peloponnese, on our way, just 14 km from Tripoli, we visited @Tselepos Winery, (www.tselepos.gr), which is 36 years old (since 1989). It was the creation of Yiannis and Amalia Taelepos. There we tasted the PDO wine of Mantineia, which took the name of the area.
In Messinia we visited withe the guidance pf Victoria Yavorskaya the impressive and grandiose Messene. There we honored the archaeologist and father of Ancient Messene, Petros Themelis, who excavated it and dedicated his life for this site.
Accompanied by her we visited Andromonastiro and we were transferred all of sudden to the 13th and 14th century.
In rhw Archaeological Museum of Messinia (www.archaeologicalmuseums.gr) we visited the impressive permanent collection and realised the history of this fertile and rich Messinia
We didn't live behind the oldest, "Pneumatopoteion" (www.callicounisshop.gr), whose birth certificate is 1850. We tasted there two delicious liqueurs out of Mastic and sour cherry!
In Kalamata there is the unique Collection of Traditional Costumes "Victoria Carellia", where we admired the impressive technique and the bright colours of clothes that date from different eras and areas.
We visited the Palace of Nestor in Pylos. Nestor was according to the myth the oldest and wisest concelour of Agamemnon and one of the most important Achaean kings of Homer's Iliad.
Meanwhile, we visited the Mycenaean Tholos Tomb with the guidance and explanations of Sharon Stocker, the archeologist and Director of the Ephorate of the Antiquities in Argolis and Deputy Director of the Pylos Excavations.
Our colleague @Yiannis Manoloudis guided us in Niokastro in the town of Pylos. We observed the area, where the Naval Battle of Navarino took place on ghe 20th of October 1827. It led to the survival of the Greek Revolution and the destruction of the ottoman and Egyptian navy.
It was a deep dive into the history of both Messinia and Peloponnese, but also the Modern Greek History and ig was shaped in the 19th century.
We would like to thank all the participants and the representatives of the areas and the local authorities that helped and guided us.
