On Monday, the 9th, and Wednesday, the 11th of December 2024 the guides of The Association of Licensed Tourist Guides, Athens-Greece had the pleasure go visit one of the oldest and the most impressive museums in Athens: Museum of Modern Greek Culture!
It was founded in 1918 and lies in the heart of Athens. It's on Monastiraki square, in-between the old and new Athens. This new entry of a museum is located in an old square block, where the long history of the city gets unfolded in front of us with its buildings.
A late-Roman wall, an early christian Basilica, parts of an Ottoman era mansion, a church of the 17th century and buildings of the 19th and the 20th century consist this mosaic of Athens' history.
With the assistance of the curators of the Museum and ethnologist-folklorists Panagiota Andrianopoulou, Niki Dafni, Eugenia Dafni, Ourania Rapti, Eleni Papathoma and the archaeologist Despoina Karveli we travelled in Greece of the time between the 18th century until the decade of 1970's. We saw, learned and got closer to objects of the every day life of our grandparents or parents! Some of us had used them, as well! That was really emotional...
Around 3.000 museum objects, digital exhibits and visual material and family exhibits made us realise that past can be our present and without it we cannot have got future..
We would like to thank the Museum of Modern Greek Culture (www.mnep.gr) for its hospitality and the unique experience it offered us all! We would like as well to thank everyone that joined us in this trip!
And we would like, of course, to invite all of you to visit it alone or even better with a licenced tourist guide!
